Syncing Addressbook and Contacts withThunderbird

After the change over in email providers, it may not be obvious how to synchronize contacts and calendars. The web host provides address book and calendar synchronization through the standard DAV protocol, supported by most email clients, but you may have to adjust some settings to get it to work. Following are instructions for the Mozilla Thunderbird email client:

Temporary email outage and migration

Auxiliary emails will be temporarily offline again late in the evening of Saturday, 24 September and potentially part of 25 September to finish email migration to the new server. There may be some additional temporary issues on the weekend as domain record changes propagate to nameservers across the Internet, resulting in delays in email delivery.

Temporary email and website outages; email migration

During a part of Monday, 5 September and into the early morning of 6 September, there will be temporary outages of Auxiliary email accounts due to back-end changes by the vendors.
Separately, this website may be down for a short period during the early morning hours of 6 September for backups, security fixes, updates.

LCSA Amateur Radio programming for 2-way radios

In the last week, I have had to try to extend the standard radio layout for our 2-way radios to a model that we have not used before, the Baofeng UV-82HP. This radio is supported by CHIRP, but has some interesting quirks that had to be worked around and the memory layout is 128 channels in 2 banks vs. our standard 200 channel layout. As I am rebuilding and updating our programming, I intend to describe some of those issues here as well as go into why we laid out the HAM channels the way we did in the first place.

Web Site Changes - Website vs Facebook

We have used the recent unexpected website outage to make some software upgrades and changes. Some of these changes are aimed at differentiating how we use this site versus how we are using social media like Facebook. Our intention is to use the main web site for permanent things, file downloads, policies, and in-depth articles, all tagged and searchable. Facebook will be used for events, short news items, and other temporary listings.

Volunteerism and a culture of resilience takes the "terror" out of Terrorism

Frank Furedi's book, "Invitation To Terror: The Expanding Empire of the Unknown" explores the culture of fear which has developed around terrorism and the ways in which we do the work of the Terrorist for them. As Schmid's definition of terrorism starts:

Terrorism refers on the one hand to a doctrine about the presumed effectiveness of a special form or tactic of fear-generating, coercive political violence...[Academic Consensus Definition of Terorism (ACDT 2011)]
